Job Description
Maylor Foundation Contractors Heavy Equipment Operator will run excavators, mini excavators, lulls, and related heavy civil equipment on geotechnical and deep foundation projects across Florida and nationwide. This is a hands-on field role. You operate assigned machines safely and productively, support excavation and earthwork, handle and place materials, and step off the machine to perform general labor alongside the crew whenever site production calls for it. The right candidate combines precise machine control, strong situational awareness around ground crews and utilities, and the versatility to contribute wherever the job needs an extra set of hands.
Job Requirements
Equipment Operation
- Operate excavators and mini excavators as primary machines for excavation, trenching, grading, backfilling, loading, and material placement on geotechnical and deep foundation projects.
- Operate telehandlers (lulls / all-terrain rough terrain forklifts), skid steers, loaders, and other heavy civil equipment as assigned.
- Control machine attachments — buckets, thumbs, forks, augers, breakers, and grapples — with precision around structures, utilities, and personnel.
- Position and maneuver equipment on uneven terrain, in confined work zones, and in varying weather while maintaining full awareness of surroundings.
- Follow hand signals, radio communication, and spotter direction when working near ground crews, suspended loads, and other equipment.
Excavation & Earthwork
- Excavate to line, grade, and depth per plans, staking, and foreman direction for foundations, shafts, trenches, and earth retention work.
- Dig and work carefully around existing above- and below-ground utilities; support potholing and locate verification to avoid strikes.
- Load trucks, move spoils, and shape and level earth efficiently to keep the crew and rig productive.
Material Handling & Lifting
- Use heavy equipment to safely lift, transport, and place materials, tooling, and components around the jobsite.
- Read and apply load charts; stay within rated capacities and safe operating limits for the equipment and configuration in use.
- Stage material to support crew workflow and eliminate downtime.
General Labor & Site Support
- Perform general labor and hands-on field tasks alongside the crew whenever not operating equipment — this is an expected and routine part of the role.
- Assist with rigging, setup and teardown of equipment, material handling, jobsite housekeeping, and site preparation.
- Support pile driving, drilling, drilled shaft, and earth retention operations as directed; fill in wherever production requires an additional laborer.
Equipment Inspection & Maintenance
- Perform daily pre-operation walk-arounds and inspections; check fluids, grease points, tracks/tires, hydraulics, and attachments before operation.
- Complete daily equipment inspection checklists and document deficiencies; tag out and report unsafe equipment immediately.
- Keep machines clean, fueled, and greased; perform routine operator-level maintenance and report repair needs promptly to the foreman.
Safety
- Operate in full compliance with OSHA, Maylor safety policies, and site-specific plans; wear and properly use required PPE at all times.
- Maintain strict Red Zone and exclusion-zone discipline around operating equipment; never swing loads over personnel and always confirm ground crew position.
- Maintain safe clearance from power lines, overhead hazards, trenches, and excavation edges.
- Attend daily toolbox talks and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) meetings; stop work and notify the foreman or safety officer on any imminent-danger condition.
Communication & Documentation
- Communicate production status, equipment issues, and changed field conditions to the foreman throughout the shift.
- Record equipment hours, work performed, and material usage as required; turn in accurate paperwork daily.
- Read and interpret site plans, grade stakes, and layouts relevant to assigned work.
Additional Information
QUALIFICATIONS & CERTIFICATIONS
Experience & Skills
- 3+ years operating heavy equipment in civil, heavy civil, or heavy construction — with demonstrated proficiency on excavators and mini excavators.
- Hands-on experience operating telehandlers/lulls, and familiarity with skid steers, loaders, and related heavy civil equipment.
- Proven ability to excavate safely and accurately around existing utilities and in tight, congested work zones.
- Ability to read grade stakes, site layouts, and basic plans; sound spatial judgment and machine control.
- Willingness and physical ability to perform general labor and support tasks whenever not operating equipment.
- Reliable, safety-focused team player who takes direction well and adapts to changing site conditions, Florida soils, and weather.
Required Certifications
- Valid Florida Driver's License — clean MVR
Preferred Certifications
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety (current)
- NCCCO Rigger / Signal Person
- First Aid / CPR (current)
Physical Requirements
- Perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods, frequently in adverse heat, cold, and weather conditions.
- Lift and carry up to 50–80 lbs repeatedly; climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and work on uneven ground.
- Sustain focus, awareness, and fine motor control while operating equipment for full shifts.
- Travel to and stay at project sites statewide in Florida and across the US as required.
