Job Description
Maylor Foundation Contractors is seeking a skilled AutoCAD Drafter / Design Technician to support our engineering team on geotechnical and deep foundation projects across Florida. Working directly under the Principal Engineer and Design Engineer, you will translate engineering concepts into precise, construction-ready technical drawings for retaining wall systems, shoring, driven pile, drilled shaft, and earth retention installations. This role sits at the intersection of design and construction — your drawings go directly into the field, so accuracy and clarity are non-negotiable. The right candidate has strong AutoCAD proficiency, a working understanding of civil or structural engineering principles, and the organizational discipline to manage multiple active projects simultaneously.
Job Requirements
Technical Drafting & Drawing Production
• Produce detailed 2D construction drawings in AutoCAD including plan views, cross-sections, elevation details, wall profiles, pile layout plans, shoring schemes, and connection details for geotechnical and deep foundation systems.
• Develop and revise drawing sets for retaining wall systems (soldier pile, sheet pile, soil nail, tieback, MSE), driven pile foundations (H-pile, pipe pile), drilled shafts, and helical pile installations.
• Create 3D models and visual aids using AutoCAD or Civil 3D to support design presentations, client submittals, and constructability reviews.
• Prepare as-built drawings by incorporating field-marked redlines, RFI resolutions, and inspector-directed changes into the official record set.
• Maintain strict version control on all drawing sets — track revisions, issue logs, and submittal histories to ensure the field always has the current approved drawing.
Engineering Support & Coordination
• Interpret geotechnical boring logs, engineer calculations, design specifications, and FDOT standard plans to inform accurate drawing production.
• Coordinate with the Design Engineer and Principal Engineer during design development — flag conflicts, dimensioning questions, or unclear specifications before drawings are issued.
• Support the preparation of sealed engineering submittal packages including drawing sets, calculations summaries, material specifications, and FDOT-required documentation.
• Gather and incorporate information from engineers, architects, utility agencies, and project stakeholders to ensure drawings reflect complete and accurate site conditions.
• Assist with QA/QC review of drawings prior to issue — check dimensions, notes, details, and title block information against project-specific requirements and company standards.
Estimating & Bid Support
• Perform quantity takeoffs from drawings to support cost estimating — calculate linear footage, pile counts, wall areas, concrete volumes, and material quantities.
• Assist the Design Engineer and Project Managers in assembling complete bid packages including construction drawings, plan sets, notes, schedules, and supporting documentation.
• Prepare preliminary design sketches and schematic layouts to support proposal development and design-build pursuits.
• Research material specifications, product data sheets, and vendor submittals to support design decisions and estimate accuracy.
Document Control & Project Administration
• Maintain organized digital and physical project files — drawing sets, submittals, RFI logs, correspondence, and permits — for all active and archived projects.
• Manage drawing transmittals, submittal logs, and agency correspondence; track review status and flag overdue responses to the Project Manager.
• Support scheduling of engineering meetings, design reviews, and client coordination calls; prepare and distribute meeting minutes.
• Maintain and enforce company CAD standards, title block templates, layer naming conventions, and drawing file organization protocols.
Additional Information
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience & Education
• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Drafting Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field; equivalent hands-on experience considered.
• 2+ years of production drafting experience in a civil engineering, structural engineering, or specialty foundation/geotechnical environment.
• Demonstrated portfolio of construction-ready drawing sets — applicants should be prepared to share work samples during the interview process.
Technical Skills
• Full proficiency in AutoCAD 2D — plans, details, sections, annotations, xrefs, layouts, and plotting; this is the core daily tool for this role.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D for surface modeling, alignment work, or grading design is a strong advantage.
• Ability to read and interpret geotechnical reports, boring logs, structural calculations, FDOT standard plans, and construction specifications.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel for quantity tracking and schedules, Word for reports and specs, Outlook for project correspondence).
• Experience with Bluebeam Revu for PDF markup, drawing review, and submittal management is preferred.
• Familiarity with MicroStation, Revit, or Procore is a plus but not required.
Competencies
• Precision-driven — understands that a dimension error on a drawing can mean a costly field mistake; checks work thoroughly before every issue.
• Organized and proactive — manages multiple drawing sets across several active projects without losing version control or missing deadlines.
• Collaborative — works fluidly with engineers, PMs, and field crews; takes direction well and asks the right questions early.
• Curious about construction — takes initiative to understand how the systems being drawn are actually built in the field.
