The Florida Department of Transportation is working today to tee up tomorrow’s talent for building our state’s roads. Through the Statewide Workforce Development Program, students and young adults will have a host of opportunities to learn about what it takes to build highways that keep Floridians moving – and explore careers in the transportation industry.
The Student Construction Internship Initiative will focus on providing a paid work experience over the summer in the road and bridge construction industry, allowing students and young adults, ages 16-21, to learn first-hand about entry level and skilled trades that go into building and maintaining Florida’s roadways.
Youth will be provided the opportunity to work with some of the transportation industry’s leading contractors. The internship program provides students with on-the-job training and mentoring to develop critical work readiness skills – all while exploring road construction as a possible career.
- The duration of the internship is 6-8 weeks.
- Youth will work up to 40 hours per week.
- Youth must be able to work outside (may have some inside working conditions).
- This program is free!
The Student Construction Career Academy will focus on providing a small select group of Florida high school and technical school students a hands-on, one-day immersive academy with select contractors to receive an in-depth learning experience to engage in industry activities. The activities will be contractor specific and held throughout the school year for an up-close personal look into the road and bridge construction industry. The academy includes a parent orientation segment to answer all your questions. At the completion of the Academy, the student will receive a certificate of completion.
